Article about my research

A while ago, I received a call from Terrence Murnin, who writes and edits for the student newsletter for Northcentral University.  He interviewed me and wrote a very nice article about my research here.

Matisse: Life Painting

We don't often hear about Matisse's humorous side, but he loved to tell entertaining stories -- often imitating the key players.  He drew self-deprecating cartoon-like sketches of himself in his letters that he wrote to friends and family.  This is a story I read in Spurling's bio The Unknown Matisse, which I highly recommend.

Matisse: Advice for a Young Artist

This comic strip illustrates an event recounted in The Unknown Matisse by Hilary Spurling.  I've been reading a lot of artist biographies, and I think I have enough stories for a second issue of Artist to Artist -- if the first one is received well, I'll keep going.

Artist to Artist #1 Coming Soon!

Soon you'll have a chance to buy my new comic book!  I will be doing a sale/signing at an event sponsored by Heroes Your Mom Threw Out Comic Shop.   Depending on how busy it is, I usually do a free sketch with purchase. Now remember, by "sketch" I mean, a "sketch".  The comics are $5.  These "art parties" that Heroes hosts are fun events.  There will several other comics artists there.  I think it's neat to see the original artwork on display, talk to the artists, watch them draw, and talk to others who like comics as much as I do.

What: The Mini-Bot Arty Party
Where: the Elks Lodge in Elmira, NY.  300 E. Gray Street, Elmira,  NY 14901
When: Sunday, June 10 at 4:00

If you've been reading recent posts, you know all about this book. If not, let me tell you. These are all true stories about artists that have been related by art historians and biographers.  Sometimes truth is stranger --and funnier -- than fiction! In each story, one artist interacts with another.  Whenever artists get together, things happen! Sometimes it's inspiration, competition, camaraderie, and sometimes someone loses an ear!

The artists who appear in this comic are Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso,, Mondrian, Calder, Rauschenberg, Duchamp, Johns, Warhol, Warhola, and Wales!  So, I have written myself into the history of modern art. I think that took a lot of cojones!

The other artists there will be:

Ethan Young! www.tailscomic.com
F. Boley! www.greatbattlesamericanlore.com
Joey Schicte!l www.joeyvegasics.deviantart.com
Dan Morris! www.mycheerfulnightmare.blogspot.com

I hope to see some of you there!
