The Mighty Andar: A Day in the Life

The challenge for this week on 52 Comic Challenges is to draw a page with 20 or more panels on that page. It's tough! Here is my entry for this challenge.

The Origin of the Mighty Andar

There’s a really great website for aspiring cartoonists called 52 Challenges —Each week they will post an assignment for you. The challenge for this week is to imagine yourself as a superhero. What are your powers and how did you get them? Tell the story in a two page comic.

The whole site is very inspirational, but just so you know -- some of the comics there may not be for younger children.

The comic below is my entry. Now my secret is out!

Our Mecca to the MOCCA

We just got back from a trip to NYC. One of our stops was at the MOCCA (Museum of Cartoon & Comic Art). It's a small museum, but one of the few places you can see original comic art in person.

Many comic artists say that one of the best ways to improve in your art is to look at original pages. I like looking at them up close, analyzing the process and technique.

The show currently there is called "Looking for Face like Mine". For years African-Americans were ignored in sequential art, or portrayed using negative stereotypes. This show documents this, but also shows examples of characters and creators who started to turn things around.

If you're interested in this museum, you can learn more about them from their website.

T.A.I.L.S. Comics #41: "Basket Case"

I’ve spent the last two weeks drawing like mad trying to complete the next four episodes of T.A.I.L.S. I finished up today! Each episode is four pages. It takes quite a while for me to draw 16 pages. Each summer I try to draw a full year ahead so that the deadlines aren’t sneaking up on me during the school year.

Each episode is usually three pages of comics and the last page is knot instruction. Here is T.A.I.L.S. #41: “Basket Case”, which will appear in the February ‘08 issue of Boy’s Quest.

I've Been Simpsonized!

There’s a neat new website they’ve put together to advertise the new Simpson’s Movie. At this website you can upload a photo of yourself and the photo will be converted to a picture of you drawn in the Simpson’s style. This photo is what came out when I tried it.

If you’d like to try it, the site is http://www.simpsonizeme.com

Just to warn you—the program seems to be very picky about what photo you use. I had to try a few times before it would work.
